ABOUT US

Who we are, where we come from, and where we're headed as a church family

Who We Are

Jenison Christian Church exists to help people become passionate followers of Jesus Christ. We are a non-denominational Christian community serving West Michigan. We are a bunch of imperfect people doing life together as we serve our Almighty God. We strive to encourage and walk alongside each other in the highs and lows of life and show our love to others in the community and beyond.

YOU MATTER TO GOD, AND YOU MATTER TO US!

Where We Come From

Where We Come From

In 1977-78 several members of the Kentwood Christian Church lived in the Jenison/Hudsonville area, and they agreed that it was time to form a nucleus to plant a church "way out" (it was still mostly farmland) on the western edge of Grand Rapids. The planting team called Phil Williams to be the Church Planter / Senior Minister and he and his family moved to the area and got to work.

The 29 Charter Members signed a large document which says:

“We, the undersigned, do hereby declare our intentions to organize a new congregation of obedient believers in Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of the Living God. We will use the Bible, God’s Word, as our only rule of faith and practice. Persons will be received into active membership, without discrimination, who repent from sin, confess faith in Christ, and are baptized into Him. We will encourage one another to faithful growth in Christlikeness.”

We rented meeting space at Jenison Junior High and in 1979 land was purchased. In 1980 the congregation moved into the building at 7003 28th Avenue in Hudsonville ... but kept the name Jenison Christian.

As the population of the Jenison / Hudsonville area has grown, so has our campus. In the 1990’s we added a fellowship hall and purchased some mobile classrooms. The classrooms were removed prior to our latest addition in 2016-2017.

That’s when the congregation took on a 1.7-million-dollar addition / remodeling / updating that included a new main entrance and children’s play area; remodeling the original Auditorium, restrooms, and classrooms. The fellowship hall became the Staff Offices / Community Outreach / and Family Room gathering space.

The biggest change was on the west side of the building. We added a large kitchen, lobby, restrooms, classrooms and Multipurpose Room. A Capital Campaign raised over $500,000 to begin the building / remodeling process and then $1,300,000.00 of bonds were sold.

Where We're Headed

Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (The Message)

Jenison Christian Church intends to move into the future in faith.

  • We know that God has called us to share the love and hope of Jesus with the next generation.
  • We are committed to walking with families as they nurture faith in their children.
  • We are committed to walking with singles as they discover ways to use their careers as ministry opportunities.
  • We are committed to walking with couples in every stage of life as they use their homes as “ministry headquarters” to serve their neighbors.
  • We are committed to helping retirees to reenlist in the work of God’s kingdom. Rather than taking a seat on the bench, there’s still time to get in the game.
  • We are committed to make a difference in our community and our culture by partnering with the Lord to make disciples of Jesus… one life; one home; one neighborhood at a time.
  • We are committed to partnering with the Lord as He fills Eternity with passionate followers of Jesus.
